Sourcing and Manufacturing
Agulis Pigments’ comprehensive selection of pure pigments are developed from naturally occurring earths and minerals. With sustainability in mind, we carefully research and mine the raw materials, exclusively from provinces across Armenia. Below you will find a map of the Republic of Armenia; the separate regions that are illustrated represent all eleven administrative divisions within the country. This map may be use for educational purposes; it’s also created to serve as a unique search tool for our website. Every pigment that we offer is organized in accordance to its origin; by selecting a marked province, you will be redirected to a page that contains all of the the pigments from the selected region.
Given Armenia’s extremely mountainous landscape, the remote locations of some of our sources are difficult to reach, and furthermore, present many challenges during mining. We take pride in providing clear information regarding our sources, and the origin of our pigments. Our mining sites and processing facilities are carefully regulated to ensure safety and sustainability.
We only manufacture minimally processed pure natural pigments, that are never mixed. To achieve this, we undertake a demanding and labor intensive process. Although it’s a nuanced operation, manufacturing can essentially be broken down into multiple stages. We begin by mining the raw materials; the ore is extracted and transported to one of our processing facilities. After undergoing a separating and cleaning procedure—which includes additional steps, such as washing and drying the ochres—our mill is used to complete the micronization process. The final ground pigments are packaged and prepared for distribution in our facility in Yerevan, Armenia. Given that all natural pigments generally show some variability, to ensure consistency in color, we continually manufacture each pigment on a considerable scale, and always maintain a substantial amount of every pigment in stock.
Additionally, we continuously conduct responsible research into Armenia’s natural resources to discover and develop new earth and mineral pigments. We test and add new colors to our line on a yearly basis; please visit our Pigments page to browse through our most current international catalog . With versatile options available, we provide additional search tools, such as the color filter, for easier navigation.
